About Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One of Calcasieu Parish:

Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One of Calcasieu Parish was established in 1986 due to the growth taking place in the areas surrounding DeQuincy and in north Sulphur. The department covers a total of 125 square miles and initially started with three fire stations along Highway 27 and six fire trucks, with two trucks being housed at each station.

The first several years after being established, the department responded to 50-75 emergency calls per year. Throughout the years, with continued growth within the fire district, the emergency calls have grown in number, currently averaging 450-550 calls per year.

The department responds to all types of fires, vehicle accidents and extrications, hazardous materials incidents, rescues, power lines down, medical emergencies when requested by Acadian, and also provides automatic aid and mutual aid assistance to surrounding fire departments.

The fleet of fire trucks has grown as well. The department currently operates with ten large fire trucks, two side by side brush UTVs, one air supply trailer and four first response command vehicles.

The department has five fire stations, with three of those located on Highway 27, one on Holbrook Park Road and one on Edgerly Road. One of our stations on Highway 27 near High Hope Road was destroyed due to Hurricane Laura in August 2020 and the replacement station is currently under construction. We are operating out of a temporary station at that location until the new station is completed.

Currently, the department protects the Ward Six Fire District with 2 full time firefighters, 7 part time firefighters and 17 volunteer firefighters, trained at various levels including Entry Level Firefighter, Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, First Responder, EMT Basic & Paramedic, Instructor 1, Instructor 2, Officer 1, Officer 2, Jaws of Life, and Hazardous Materials. Firefighters are also certified in Basic First Aid, CPR and AED.

Fire protection within Ward Six District No. One is an absolute necessity and the department strives to provide the best fire protection available in the state. With the support of the citizens in our district, the department will be in service, protecting you and your family, for many years to come.

(Part 2 will explain the yearly training hour requirements for volunteer firefighters and how the Property Insurance Association Insurance Rating works)
