Ward 6 responded to investigate smoke in the area of Sandy Lane at approx. 4:00pm. Upon arrival, a land owner had numerous piles of logs burning. Land owner advised he was unaware of the burn ban that has been in place since 10-17-2024. He assisted the fire department with a tractor and the fire was extinguished. A copy of the burn ban was provided with a warning to the land owner.
At 5:39pm, Ward 6 responded to a reported woods fire on H. Broussard Rd off of High Hope Rd. On arrival of firefighters, a small section of woods were burning next to an area that had burned on 10-22-2024. The fire was extinguished with approximately 3,000 gallons of water and firefighters used hand tools to dig out smoldering stumps, roots and decayed organic material below the soil surface to ensure the fire would not rekindle.
The soil is extremely dry along with the roots, decayed pine needles and leaves. It appears this fire started due to smoldering sub surface fuels spreading to an area of unburned woods.
Reminder, the Calcasieu Parish Burn Ban is in place until further notice as drought conditions continue to worsen.
29 parishes now have burn bans in Louisiana.
